Colourful Sapphires

It’s hard not to be in love with Orkney at any time of the year, the landscape is ever changing and the skies wonderfully dramatic.  In September we have seen some amazing purple skies as the sun begins to set a little earlier and we kiss goodbye to summer.  The clouds have been incredible too and as I look back on my decision to work here, I only have to look up to know time and time again it was the right one.

September’s birthstone is the beautiful and richly coloured sapphire. The word sapphire comes from the Latin sapphiru which means blue, but contrary to popular belief, a bit like the Orkney sky, it can be a range of many different colours. Sapphires can vary from pale to deep navy blue but can also be found in yellow, pink, purple, orange, green and even black. Maybe it’s time to experiment and think outside the ring box for something a little different.

Sapphires have often been associated with royalty which is possibly where the term royal blue comes from.

Medieval kings wore sapphires believing they would be protected from their enemies, Princess Diana famously wore a sapphire engagement ring and it was later handed to Kate Middleton on her engagement to Prince William.

Napoleon gave Josephine a sapphire engagement ring and sapphire rings have also been seen on the fingers of Penelope Cruz, Beyonce and Elizabeth Hurley. So if a sapphire is your jewellery of choice you are definitely in good company.

It is well known that the diamond is the hardest substance on earth but in second position is the sapphire making it durable for every day wear. This gemstone will definitely stand the test of time.

White sapphires are often used as a more cost effective alternative to diamonds and look stunning in their own right.
