February’s birthstone is the luscious, sensual and instantly recognisable amethyst.
Once considered as precious as ruby, amethyst is still highly prized and much loved for its exquisite colouring, which can range from pink through to the deepest purple.
The ancient Greeks called this variety of quartz ‘amethyein’ – meaning ‘not drunk’ - as they believed the gemstone could prevent people from succumbing to the effects of alcohol.
