St Magnus Cathedral Orkney

A Day Out In Kirkwall

In April, we proudly opened the doors to our brand-new Kirkwall shop, bringing Alison Moore Designs to the very heart of Orkney.

Our new shop in Kirkwall offers a modern, fresh feel while still celebrating some of the vintage details that makes Alison Moore Designs unique. In comparison to our Stromness shop, Kirkwall  has a more modern edge, and we’re thrilled with how it has turned out.

We’re also excited to share that our jewellery-making workshops have now moved to Kirkwall, giving you a beautiful space to learn and create.

Exploring Kirkwall: Local Gems We Love

While setting up the shop came with its fair share of challenges and sleepless nights, spending more time in Kirkwall has been wonderful. I’ve discovered so many great places to eat, drink, and unwind. If you’re planning a visit, here are some of the best spots in Kirkwall that I’ve come to love:

Sound Archive Kirkwall Coffee

Best Coffee in Kirkwall: Archive Coffee

This became one of my favourite little escapes whilst working on the shop. Great coffee, a lovely atmosphere, and always a friendly face behind the counter. It’s the kind of place where time slows down just a little.

🥗 Best Lunch in Kirkwall: 21 Kirkwall

When I need a proper break during the day, I head to 21’s for a laid-back lunch. The food is consistently delicious, and there is something really comforting about the space. It’s a great place to pause in the middle of a busy day.

Kirkwall Hotel

🍽 Best Dinner in Kirkwall: Kirkwall Hotel

After a long day at the shop, the Kirkwall Hotel is my favourite spot for dinner. It offers a classic, warm setting with views of the harbour, making it feel special without being overly formal. I love watching the light change over the harbour from here.

Best Place to Relax: St Magnus Cathedral

One of my favourite peaceful spots in Kirkwall is outside St Magnus Cathedral. Sitting with a coffee in hand and watching the world go by is incredibly grounding and a beautiful way to appreciate Kirkwall’s history.

Nothing beats a stroll around Kirkwall Harbour. The scenery is stunning, and with the ever-changing tides and weather, there’s always something new to see.
