June is one of the few months fortunate enough to have not one, but three birthstones associated with it: pearl, alexandrite and moonstone. Each has its own unique beauty and symbolism, but here at Alison Moore we've always been particularly drawn to moonstone as June's Birthstone.
Perhaps it's because we spend so much of our time looking up at Orkney's extraordinary skies. On a clear night, when the moonlight stretches across the sea and the landscape seems to glow, it's easy to understand why this beautiful gemstone has captured people's imaginations for centuries.
Pearls, the most traditional June birthstone, have long been associated with purity and wisdom. Alexandrite, a much rarer stone, is prized for its remarkable ability to change colour depending on the light. Moonstone, meanwhile, is celebrated for its ethereal glow and connection to intuition, new beginnings and the lunar cycle.
Moonstone has long been favoured in Scandinavia, and its soft, shifting light feels perfectly at home here in Orkney. The ancient Romans believed it was formed from moonbeams trapped within stone. Looking at its luminous shimmer, it's not difficult to see why. If you're drawn to lunar-inspired jewellery, you might also enjoy exploring our moonstone and celestial designs, including the Gold Moonstone Waning Crescent Moon Pendant, handcrafted in our Orkney workshop.
No two moonstones are quite the same. Each one catches the light differently, revealing flashes of silver, blue and white as it moves. It's a gemstone that rewards a closer look, quietly revealing its character over time. These qualities are captured perfectly in our Mirror Mirror Moonstone Ring.
Because moonstone is a little softer than some gemstones, it benefits from a little extra care. We think that's part of its charm.
Whether chosen as a June birthstone gift, a meaningful piece of moonstone jewellery, or simply because you love its gentle glow, moonstone remains one of our favourite ways to capture a little of the magic of the northern sky.
