At this time of year, we're often asked about wearing jewellery at the beach, in the sea or on holiday.
Living in Orkney, where much of life happens around the coastline, it's something we think about regularly too. Saltwater, sand and sunshine can all affect jewellery over time, but that doesn't mean your favourite pieces need to stay at home.
With a little care, jewellery can be worn and enjoyed throughout the summer months.
By the Sea
Many of us look forward to a swim in the sea during the summer months. While the occasional splash is unlikely to cause any harm, regular exposure to saltwater can affect jewellery over time, dulling precious metals and leaving deposits around settings and clasps.
Rings are also surprisingly easy to lose in the water, particularly when swimming in cooler temperatures. If you're planning a swim, it's often best to leave jewellery safely on shore.
Days on the Beach
Anyone who has spent time on an Orkney beach will know how easily sand finds its way into everything.
Jewellery is no exception. Fine grains can become trapped in chains, catches and settings, and may cause wear over time. Gemstones are also particularly vulnerable to scratching.
For days spent on the beach, it can be worth opting for simpler pieces and keeping more treasured jewellery somewhere safe until later.
Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs
Sea water isn't the only thing to be mindful of during the summer. Chlorine found in swimming pools and hot tubs can affect certain metals and gemstones if exposure is repeated over time.
Removing jewellery before swimming is a small step that can help keep pieces looking their best for longer.
Sun Cream and Summer Skincare
Sun cream is an essential, but lotions and oils can leave a residue on gemstones and precious metals, reducing their shine.
Allowing sun cream and skincare products to absorb before putting on jewellery can help. A gentle wipe with a soft cloth at the end of the day will also remove any build-up from sun cream, sea spray or sand.
Jewellery Made to Be Worn
Jewellery is made to be worn, not kept in a box. A little extra care during the summer months is usually all that's needed to keep favourite pieces looking their best, whether they're accompanying you on a holiday, a walk along the shore or simply everyday life.
