The name ruby comes from the Latin, ‘rubeus’, meaning – you guessed it already - red or reddish.
Prized throughout the centuries, particularly in the Far East, ruby is a red variety of the mineral corundum, with the element chromium responsible for its amazing colouring and natural fluorescence.
Like its close relative, sapphire – the blue version of corundum – ruby is incredible durable and second only to diamond in terms of hardness.
